“Petros Klampanis is a musician who has always spoken from the heart.” When a journalist from the American trade magazine DownBeat attests to the bassist that his music always comes from the heart and that he speaks from the heart, this is by no means a cheesy-sweet phrase à la poetry album. And anyone who meets the Greek in person and hears him talk about music can only confirm this: It is not only close to his heart, it is a matter close to his heart.
The unspoken and inexpressible – finding words for them is a primal human need. But as much fun as the struggle to find the supposedly “right” words can be, this passionate endeavor repeatedly reaches its limits. And that’s a good thing.
Latent Info, the new project by Klampanis, dubbed “Bass Ace” by Bass Player Magazine, with Estonian pianist Kristjan Randalu and Israeli drummer Ziv Ravitz, shows that instrumental music is indeed capable of storytelling. It tells its story as the “latent information” of a piece, just as real but intangible as unspoken thoughts, unachieved goals or flowers in the asphalt, unseen and largely ignored.
In order to bring the unexplored sound information into consciousness, the album of the same name, which will be released on February 14, 2025, was recorded – in contrast to current recording practice – while all three musicians shared the room at the same time, with the respective microphones carefully capturing the subtext floating in the room. Sometimes improvising over subtle calypso rhythms, sometimes indulging in dreamy elegies, then again giving way to strongly syncopated sounds, but always dominated by sparkling piano sounds that draw their power from the subtle.
Throughout, the musical slides and dialogues by Klampanis, Randalu and Ravitz cast a spotlight on the realm of the unspoken, overlooked and, of course, unheard or overheard – and, not least, fan out the beauty and power that lies in all unnoticed things.
Petros Klampani’s seventh album, entitled LATENT INFO (enja), will be released in mid-February 2025. It celebrated its German premiere at the Sparks & Visions Festival in Regensburg in January before going on tour through the USA in February.
“A formidable player and composer.”
