Die Pianistin, Sängerin und Komponistin Clara Haberkamp erhält beim Internationalen Jazzfestival Münster den Westfalen-Jazz-Preis 2025. Die bei Unna geborene Künstlerin gilt als herausragende Pianistin und schreibt und arrangiert für unterschiedliche Besetzungen – vom Vokalensemble bis zur Bigband.

Der Preis besteht aus einer dreiteiligen Konzertreihe für die Preisträgerin. Den Auftakt macht das Konzert beim Jazzfestival am 5. Januar 2025 um 16 Uhr im Theater Münster. Hier eröffnet Clara Haberkamp mit ihrem Trio mit dem Bassisten Oliver Potratz und dem norwegischen Schlagzeuger Jarle Vespestad den Festivalsonntag im Großen Haus. Die beiden weiteren Konzerte, diesmal jeweils im Duo mit dem Trompeter Jakob Bänsch, finden am 6. Februar 2025 im Theater Gütersloh und am 7. Februar 2025 im Jazzclub „domicil“ in Dortmund statt.

Die Jury aus Festivalleiter Fritz Schmücker, Waldo Riedl vom domicil Dortmund und Lena Jeckel vom Kulturamt Gütersloh zeichnet Clara Haberkamp vor allem für ihre unbändige Spielfreude und die große Bandbreite ihres musikalischen Spektrums aus. Sie war Mitglied im Jugendjazzorchester NRW und im Bundesjazzorchester. Mit dem Clara Haberkamp Trio wurde sie 2017 für den Musikpreis Echo Jazz nominiert.

Seit 1994 würdigt der Westfalen-Jazz-Preis Musikschaffende mit Bezug zu Westfalen. Das vom städtischen Kulturamt ausgerichtete Internationale Jazzfestival Münster findet vom 3. bis 5. Januar 2025 im Theater Münster statt.

Here, Norma Winstone brings her vocal subtlety and poetic sensibility to new pieces by Kit Downes, and to compositions by Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, and John Taylor. The programme is completed with fresh perspectives on two traditional tunes, “Black Is The Colour” and “Rowing Home.” Throughout Downes offers elegantly phrased accompaniment and adventurous interjections.

(English below) Phantastische Neuigkeiten: ab sofort übernehmen wir die Vertretung der Gesangs-Ikone Norma Winstone im Duo mit Kit Downes! Die legendäre britische Sängerin bildete von 1977 bis 2000 gemeinsam mit dem kanadischen Trompeter Kenny Wheeler und dem britischen Pianisten John Taylor das innovative Trio Azimuth, und ihre Stimme war auch oft ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Sounds von Kenny Wheelers anderen Projekten. So ist sie z.B. auf dem Kult-Album Music for Large and Small Ensembles (ECM, 1990) zu hören.

Vor kurzem hat sich die noch immer umtriebige und neugierige Sängerin „mit zeitlosem Gespür für Phrasierung, Timing und die Gestaltung ihrer Texte“ (Jazzzeitung) mit dem preisgekrönten jungen britischen Pianisten Kit Downes zu einem generationenübergreifenden Duo zusammengeschlossen. Ihr gemeinsames Album „Outpost of Dreams“ erscheint am 5. Juli bei ECM. Great news:we are now representing singing icon Norma Winstone and her duo with Kit Downes! The legendary British singer formed the innovative trio Azimuth from 1977 to 2000 with Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and British pianist John Taylor, and her voice was also often an essential part of the sound of Kenny Wheeler’s other projects. For example, she can be heard on the cult album Music for Large and Small Ensembles (ECM, 1990).

The still busy and always curious singer „with a timeless sense of phrasing, timing and the shaping of her lyrics“ (Jazzzeitung) recently joined forces with award-winning young British pianist Kit Downes to form a cross-generational duo. Their album „Outpost of Dreams“ will be released on July 5th by ECM. A unique artist as both jazz vocalist and lyricist, here Norma Winstone brings her poetic sensibilities to new pieces by Downes as well as compositions by Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, and John Taylor and brings fresh perspectives on traditional tunes.

"(...) Downes’ music prides itself on being expressive, complex and spontaneous. He has toured the world performing solo organ concerts at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, but he is also known to play with many renowned artists, such as Django Bates.

His discography consists of both collaborations and solo works. His latest album, The Betrayal (2023), was recorded with his band ENEMY, featuring bassist Petter Eldh and drummer James Maddren. Additionally, he has written commissions for London Contemporary Orchestra, the Scottish Ensemble and Cologne Philharmonie, amongst others. Moreover, in 2017 he wrote 52 piano pieces for right-hand only following a left-hand injury, writing one piece for each day of his recovery.

The Paul Acket Award “Artist Deserving Wider Recognition” is named after the founder of North Sea Jazz and aimed to showcase exceptional jazz musicians who deserve greater recognition and a wider audience for their work. Dabei horcht sie tief in sich hinein, als würde sie ihre Seele befragen - rau, kraftvoll und zugleich zart und durchlässig. Gesungen auf Englisch und Paschtu/Afghaani entwickelt ihre Musik eine Intensität, die zutiefst berührt. When the German-Afghan woman starts to sing, much more happens than just setting her vocal cords in motion – her singing becomes imploring, sculpted, whispered. In doing so, she listens deeply within, as if consulting her soul—raw, powerful, yet simultaneously delicate and permeable. Sung in English and Pashto/Afghani, her music develops an intensity that deeply moves. With her New Quartet around Harpreet Bansal (violin), Björn Meyer (bass) and Samuel Rohrer (drums), Simin creates a world of sound full of mystique and passionate freedom.
The singer and composer is known for her album with Tord Gustavsen (What Was Said, ECM), for which she also received the Record Critics‘ Annual Award, and her current album Unfading (Jazzhaus). She is currently nominated for the German Jazz Award 2024 in the category Vocal and is working on a new album which shall be released in spring 2025.

Dear friends, you all know that all my musical output is based on folklore songs and wisdom passed on to me by grandmothers and grandfathers from different regions of Ukraine. When I was making interviews with these people who still remember the old songs the amazing filmmaker @p.eterb.e accompanied me. Finally, we are very proud to share the documentary SPIVANKA with you. And we are very happy to announce that it is selected for this year´s @womex_theworldmusicexpo film screenings.
SPIVANKA shows the journey to different villages, the project @heartcore_for_the_world of Michaela Bóková and @weareheartcorerecords and it also includes reflections on the rolle of Ukrainian folklore and culture in the fight for independence and freedom against the russian invasion.

Фільм "Співанка" розповідає про подорож до різних сіл, проект @heartcore_for_the_world Міхаели Бокової та @weareheartcorerecords , а також містить роздуми про роль українського фольклору та культури в боротьбі за незалежність і свободу проти російського вторгнення.
